Oakland History

Oakland, like many other California locales, began developing during the California Gold Rush in 1849. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1852. During the Gold Rush, Oakland became a popular stop for travelers between the Bay and the Sierra Foothills. In the 1860s it was a stop along the Pony Express and the Transcontinental Railroad. Both the "Port of Oakland” and the Oakland Municipal Airport were opened in 1927. In the latter part of the 20th century, the population grew steadily with the arrival of immigrants and African-American laborers migrating from the south.
