AFTER MOVING EXPENSES

5 Tips for Recovering After Moving Expenses.

Moving can be a major expense, so you may need to be especially frugal for a while to let your savings recover. Use these tips to save a little extra money and make up for what you spent on moving day.

Calculating the costs of moving

TIP 1: ONLY BUY FURNITURE YOU NEED

When you settle into a new home, your first instinct may be to fill every empty corner and blank spot on the wall with new decor. While this will help your home feel like your own, it will also eat a hole in your pocket.

Furniture, wall decor, and other house accessories are expensive. If you want to save some money, only buy the items you absolutely need. Once you recover some of your moving expenses and get settled in, you can buy all your "want" items.

TIP 2: DO NOT TOSS JUNK MAIL

Soon after you have moved in, you may get offers in the mail for free or discounted products and services. Do not be too quick to toss out what looks like junk mail – it could be valuable.

TIP 3: FIND NEARBY SIDE JOBS

There are always ways to earn some extra money with side jobs around your neighborhood. Sign up for DoorDash or Uber and deliver food in your neighborhood. You can also walk dogs around your new area.

This will help you recuperate moving expenses and give you an opportunity to meet and familiarize yourself with your new neighbors at the same time.

TIP 4: VISIT A LOCAL LIBRARY

Visit your local library and sign up for a library card. Check out a book on local history or places of interest in your new community.

Your library can provide entertainment too. Between book clubs, DVDs, and community gatherings, there is no limit to what you can discover.

TIP 5: UNPACK YOUR KITCHEN

Do not be tempted to leave your kitchen appliances and dishes packed so you can justify ordering pizza and going to restaurants. Eating meals outside the home will add up fast, so try to cook every meal in the kitchen until your wallet has recovered from your move.

Following these tips will help reduce moving costs. Moving expenses add up, so each dollar saved will help you in the long run. For more moving tips visit the Atlas Blog or the other How To Guides.
