Planning for a bigger home when you move

  • Tips and tricks
Here are some things to remember when you're moving into a bigger house.

Sometimes homeowners need a little more room. A larger space has a lot of perks, but it's a major change when you're moving from a smaller home. Here are some things to keep in mind if you're heading to a bigger place.

Shop around

If you're moving to a larger house, odds are that all the furniture you have now isn't going to cut it. More freedom comes with more room, so take advantage now. Be sure to shop around for new pieces of furniture like dining room tables, couches and decorative items. Try and plot out each room before moving so that once you get there, the place doesn't feel empty. The more you do ahead of time, the better.

If you are going to buy new furniture, make sure the timing is right. If you're getting the couches delivered, you may just want to send them to the new spot. On the other hand, some people prefer having them at their old home beforehand and them including them in the big move. That way, you could save some money on delivery from the furniture store. Plus, you could ensure the safety of the new items by leaving them in the hands of your professional moving company whose job it is to take care of your things.

Take things out of storage

When you moved into your soon-to-be former home, did you have to put things in storage to make room? Whether you rented a storage space or loaded up the basement, make sure to go through everything before you move. It's much easier to unload everything into your home now and move it all at once instead of taking several trips. So go ahead and throw your family's bikes or other big, miscellaneous items in the garage so you can include these pieces in your move on the big day.

Think lighting

A bigger home means a lot of differences in amenities, but a big one has to do with lighting. Even if the new place has lots of windows, make sure you have enough light sources when you first move in. The last thing you want is to unload and unpack in the dark. Illuminate the room with some bright lightbulbs. It will make all the difference in improving your mood.

Hire a moving company

Packing up an entire household takes time and effort, and most people can't just drop their lives to attend to all the things that need to get done. That's where a moving company comes in. This business offers all the services you may need from supplying boxes and tape to packing to transporting all your belongings. With a moving company, you know that your items are going to be safely taken care of throughout the entire relocation process. What more could you want? Make it easy on yourself, and hire Atlas Van Lines to take care of your move.
