ATLAS® VAN LINES’ 59TH ANNUAL CORPORATE RELOCATION SURVEY: FAMILY, FLEXIBILITY AND THE ECONOMY ARE DRIVING RELOCATION DECISIONS
EVANSVILLE, IND. (April 16, 2026) — Today, leading mover Atlas® Van Lines released the results of its 59th annual Corporate Relocation Survey, the first and longest-running study providing a comprehensive look at corporate relocation trends, policies, and practices. The 2026 findings reflect corporate relocation resilience and expected growth despite major political, regulatory, and technological shifts in 2025.
“This year’s report illustrates that relocation remains a key component of workforce strategy in a hybrid and AI-powered world, and that it must be tailored to individuals’ unique needs in order to be successful,” said Jack Griffin, Chairman and CEO of Atlas® World Group. “Our survey respondents show there are multiple ways to bring company and individual needs together harmoniously.”
External Factors Impacting Relocation
The top three external factors impacting relocation held steady from 2024 to 2025:
- Economic conditions (53% in 2025).
- Lack of qualified people locally/ “Great Resignation” (27% in 2025).
- Real estate market/available housing (26% in 2025).
Housing availability and affordability affected relocation in 2025 for both renters and homeowners. To combat shrinking supply, elevated mortgage rates, and high home prices, companies offered additional support to employees, including cost-of-living adjustments (52%), extended temporary housing benefits, (38%) and assistance with mortgage rates (28%).
There was also a significant increase (9%) in political and regulatory considerations following changes to the H-1B visa process in the U.S. Beginning Sept. 25, 2025, H-1B petitions required a $100,000 payment to the federal government before submitting the petition. Among companies that relocated employees internationally, 94% reported that the visa fee had some level of impact on their relocation budgets. In response, 82% of companies adjusted their relocation policies in 2025 and anticipated policy impact in 2026.
Talent Mobility Trends
New for this year’s survey, Atlas included “taking children out of school or moving them to a new school” as a reason employees decline relocation – and it immediately ranked among the top five. At a time when adults are juggling work, childcare, aging parents, pets, and more, companies that strengthen family-centered relocation support can turn one of the biggest barriers to mobility into a realistic option for working families.
In 2025, most companies (59%) had an employee decline to relocate. The top three reasons cited were:
- Family issues/ties (34% in 2025).
- Concerns about housing/mortgage at the new location (28% in 2025).
- Concerns of selling/leaving the home at origin (21% in 2025).
Across the board, companies noted that a consistent mix of fixed and flexible benefits, targeted nonstandard incentives, and core housing and relocation support were most effective in successful relocations and meeting employees’ needs.
Invited via email, 549 decision-makers representing over 20 industries completed the Corporate Relocation Survey between Dec. 15, 2025, and Jan. 16, 2026. Each respondent is employed by a company that either relocated employees during the past two years or plans to relocate employees in 2026. In the report, these firms are categorized by size:
- Small: Fewer than 500 employees (32%)
- Midsize: 500-4,999 employees (52%)
- Large: 5,000+ employees (16%)
