Moving Tips & Tools
We understand there are many moving parts when relocating your life. That’s why Atlas® offers helpful tips and tools to ensure every step of your move goes as smoothly as possible.
How to Plan and Promote a Moving Sale
A moving sale can help you find new homes for items you don’t plan to take with you. A little preparation makes it easier to price your belongings, attract local shoppers, and keep sale day organized. Use these steps to plan a garage or moving sale before your move.
1. Decide what to sell and set a date
Walk through your home and separate items into groups: sell, keep, donate, recycle, or discard. Keep sale items together and clearly separate anything that is not for sale. Check your moving timeline before choosing a date, and allow time afterward to donate or arrange pickup for anything that doesn’t sell.
If you’re sharing the sale with family or neighbors, agree on how items and proceeds will be identified. Different colored tags or a simple seller code can help keep track of who owns each item.
2. Price items and get them ready
Research comparable items online to set realistic prices. Price items to encourage buyers, and put a visible tag or sticker on each one. Bundle related items—such as kitchen sets, tools, or games—and keep small pieces with the item they belong to. Clean items and check that they’re complete before displaying them.
Group similar items together so shoppers can browse easily. Put clothing on a rack or clothesline when possible, and keep fragile items protected until sale day.
3. Advertise your moving sale
Create a clear listing or flyer with:
- The sale date and hours
- The address or cross streets, as appropriate
- A rain date or weather plan, if relevant
- A short list of appealing items, such as furniture, appliances, tools, or electronics
- A contact method for questions
Post the details through suitable local channels, such as neighborhood groups, community marketplaces, online sale directories, or local classifieds. You can also check whether local newspapers accept sale listings. Follow each platform’s rules and post early enough for shoppers to plan.
If you put up signs, check local rules first. Use large, readable lettering and clear directions, and remove signs promptly after the sale.
4. Set up for an easy sale day
Arrange items by category and leave enough room for people to browse. Keep prices easy to see. Gather shopping bags, boxes, tissue, or newspaper for purchases, and have a way to keep track of payments and make change if you’ll accept cash.
Prepare for changing weather by keeping a cover nearby. If you offer drinks or refreshments, place them where they won’t interfere with the sale area. Assign helpers clear roles—such as answering questions, organizing items, or handling payments—and keep children supervised.
5. Wrap up what doesn’t sell
At the end of the sale, sort remaining items into keep, donate, recycle, or discard groups. Arrange donation or pickup before the moving deadline, and clear signs and sale supplies from the property.
