Schertz History

The City of Schertz began when the family of Joseph and Anna Schertz were enticed to emigrate from Germany to San Antonio with the promise of a better life. Once in Texas, they met Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels who was establishing a German colony. The Schertz family joined this settlement and in time, was able to purchase more land in the neighboring town of "Cut Off" for their growing family. The Schertz family established a farm growing grains, and then later cotton. The family continued to prosper with a cotton mill, general store, water supply plant, and electric company. The railroad arrived in 1876, and the first school was built in 1890. The town was officially named Schertz in 1899 and incorporated as a city in 1958. Randolph Field was established in 1930 just outside Schertz to serve as a flight school for the US Army air corps. Now renamed Randolph Air Force Base, the base continues to serve as a flight training school and home to approximately 1,200 members of the Air Force.
