North Canton History
North Canton was originally named New Berlin in 1831, when it was founded by Samuel Bachtel. It became a 23-lot community of mostly German settlers. Its citizens voted to change its name to North Canton in 1918 due to the unpopularity of anything German-associated during World War I. The Hoover Company was founded by William H. “Boss” Hoover, who ran the local tannery before he decided to manufacture vacuum cleaners. Hoover’s factory caused a steady population increase from 1930 onward, and the construction of Interstate Highway 77 boosted the population to its current levels.
