Miami History

Miami’s early history was filled with Spanish-American territory disputes and Indian wars, including the devastating Seminole Wars. During the 1890s, however, pioneers moved into the area and more outsiders began seeing its potential. In 1896, the first railroad reached Miami. Over time, three separate real estate booms helped Miami grow into the metropolis it has become today. One took place after the Everglades were drained in Florida in 1906, another during the 1920s, and a third occurred after WWII when soldiers who had trained in Miami returned as residents.
