Hauppauge History

Hauppauge originated as a waypoint by Native Americans who took advantage of the underground springs for drinking water. The name has Native American roots and translates to "the land of sweet water". When the colonial legislature of New York established the King’s Highway, the route ran through Hauppauge. The first families settled in Hauppauge between 1730 and 1755. Settlers at that time earned money by cutting timbers and shipping them to New York City. In 1930 Hauppauge was still a small community with a population of over 500. Substantial growth came in the second half of the twentieth century, when 1,100 acres were cleared to build an industrial park. Today, the Hauppauge Industrial Park is one of the largest in the United States. Read more about Hauppauge and Long Island’s history using the following link.
