Colorado Springs History

In 1806 Lieutenant Zebulon Pike was sent out by President Jackson to decide the southwestern borders of the Louisiana Purchase. On this expedition, the Lieutenant discovered Pikes Peak, and 65 years later the city of Colorado Springs was founded at the base of the peak. Colorado Springs was originally founded to be a resort town for travelers and people with ill health who were thought to benefit from the natural springs. But, in the 1890s, miners discovered gold in Pikes Peak. Upon that discovery, Colorado Springs began to expand and became known at that time as “the city of millionaires.”
