Brandon History

In 1857, John Brandon brought his family to Fort Brooke in the new state of Florida and acquired more than 200 acres of land for his homestead. Brandon donated land for the first church and school in the nearby community of New Hope. Upon the arrival of the Florida Central and Peninsula Railroad, a rail depot and town was planned and named in honor of John Brandon. The first Brandon census was taken in 1922 when the population was 100. Brandon remained a primarily agricultural community, raising chickens and producing eggs, and growing oranges and other crops until 1959, when the Brandon Chamber of Commerce was formed to help promote business and growth. Their effort was successful, and by the early 1960s, Brandon’s population reached 8,000, and the community began spreading out into the surrounding area. By the 1970s, growth was causing traffic congestion as businesses, three shopping malls, and a population of 40,000 was all contained within a six-mile radius. The opening of Interstate 75 in the late 1970’s spurred additional growth, and the expansion continues, with Brandon growing more than 30% since 2000. Learn more about Brandon’s history.
