Arlington History

Settlement in the Arlington area started in the mid-1800’s. A trading post established in 1841, followed by a Texas Ranger post in 1848. The city was founded in 1876 and incorporated in 1884. Initially, Arlington was a cotton processing and farming center because the city provided access to the Texas and Pacific Railway. Arlington experienced a rapid growth period when General Motors opened an assembly plant in the community. According to census records, Arlington grew from a population of 7,692 in 1950 to a population of more than 365,000 in 2010.
