Deductible Moving Expenses

What moving expenses are deductible?

According to the IRS, you may deduct reasonable costs for moving your household goods and personal effects to a new home. Common deductions include what you paid for:

  • Transportation
  • Packing, crating and unpacking
  • Valuation coverage and storage in transit (up to 30 days each)

You may also find tax deductions for reasonable, non-reimbursed expenses for:

  • Shipping your automobiles and boats
  • Transporting your household pets—dogs, cats, tropical fish, etc.
  • Connecting and disconnecting utilities for the move

The moving tax deduction applies only to costs for which you have not been reimbursed.

Deductions with restrictions:

  • Moving your personal belongings from a place other than your main residence (for example, a second home or relative's home). However, the cost cannot exceed what it would have cost to move them from your main residence.
  • Driving the family to your new residence is deductible, including costs for lodging (but not meals).
