EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Today, Atlas Van Lines celebrated the 50th anniversary of moving its world headquarters to Evansville. The celebratory day kicked off with a breakfast for employees and retirees, during which Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel declared it "Atlas Van Lines Day." The company also announced the Atlas Gives Back program, a new charitable initiative that runs throughout the anniversary year. Congressman Brad Ellsworth commented on the many contributions Atlas has made to its adopted hometown.

Founded in 1948 in Chicago, Atlas relocated to Evansville in 1960 after a search for a city that provided a comfortable sense of community along with a pool of qualified workers. Atlas' first building in Evansville was 15,000 square feet. The current headquarters complex, plus additional outbuildings, encompasses 197,800 square feet. As the company has continued to grow, it has become a vital contributor to Evansville's economy as well as an important community partner.

"Evansville welcomed Atlas with open arms in 1960, and we have embraced this city as our home ever since," said Glen E. Dunkerson, Atlas World Group chairman & CEO. "I can't think of a better place to live and work."

At the anniversary celebration, Jack Griffin, Atlas Van Lines president and COO, announced the Atlas Gives Back program. Atlas is sending its employees out in the community to volunteer with nonprofit organizations throughout this anniversary year. Their efforts will total 400 hours of time, representing 50 full days' worth of work. "Our employees are active participants in community life on their own time," said Griffin. "But the Atlas Gives Back program helps us extend our reach even further. It's our anniversary gift to our hometown."
