EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Atlas Van Lines received the 2008 John Biasini Environmental Excellence Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana on Oct. 10. Atlas won in the energy/renewable resources category because the company significantly reduced its energy and renewable resource output in 2007.

Atlas' corporate headquarters began implementing a focused approach to saving energy and materials in early 2007. In one year, the company reduced printed documents by 21 percent, saving more than 1 million pages (and approximately 130 trees) and nearly $50,000 in paper and ink costs. Atlas also shut down computers overnight, introduced flat-panel monitors and increased data retention. But the company didn't stop there. This year, Atlas has taken several other steps – including a heating and cooling energy audit and installing sensors to turn lights on only when someone enters the room.

"Reducing our carbon footprint is tantamount to our company's ultimate goal: conducting business with integrity," said Greg Hoover, president and chief operating officer of Atlas World Group. "A responsible company doesn't just look for ways to be fiscally responsible, but environmentally friendly as well. Over the past several years Atlas has worked hard to reduce the resources that our company –and its fleets – consume."

The awards program, which began in 2002, recognizes Southwestern Indiana companies and individuals for their commitment to a cleaner environment.

"The leadership of the chamber's environmental committee developed the program to encourage environmental stewardship and to recognize those companies that take extra effort to improve our region's environment," said Steve Schaefer, vice president of public policy for the Southwest Indiana chamber. "These awards are an effort to recognize that work and encourage action by other companies."

Atlas Van Lines is the largest subsidiary of Atlas World Group, an Evansville, Ind.-based company that posted record revenues of $943 million in 2007.
