INDIANAPOLIS — Atlas World Group, parent company of Atlas Van Lines, the nation's second-largest van line, was named a finalist in the Transportation, Distribution and Logistics category of the 2006 Techpoint Mira Awards. Finalists and winners were honored at the annual Mira Awards Gala May 19 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

Techpoint is Indiana's only statewide technology trade group representing approximately 400 corporate members, including publicly traded companies, private businesses, colleges and research universities, and local economic development organizations. The Mira Awards recognize and celebrate those who have made outstanding contributions to technology in Indiana.

"This is a great acknowledgement of Atlas' efforts to stay on the leading edge of the technology curve in the relocation industry," said Greg Hoover, Atlas senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "It's an honor to be considered in the same category as some of the other world-leading logistics firms located right here in Indiana."

In 2005 Atlas implemented a progressive labor certification program designed to provide background screening for all of its permanent laborers. Using an intranet connection to a third-party screening company, Atlas agents can quickly and easily secure background checks to determine if potential permanent employees meet Atlas' eligibility requirements.

Atlas also is the first company in the household goods relocation industry to use a trailer tracking system that allows customers to precisely track their personal belongings during a move. While many companies use tracking systems, Atlas' is the first to track the trailer itself — the equipment that actually carries the goods — as opposed to the tractor.

Another revolutionary shipment tracking system is being pioneered by Red Ball International, an Atlas World Group subsidiary that is a major household goods carrier for the military. Through the application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, the military will be able to track complete shipments, creating increased security, improved process efficiency and greater peace of mind for military families relocating overseas. This is the first time this technology has been used for the moving of household goods.

Atlas Van Lines is the largest subsidiary of Atlas World Group, an Evansville, Ind.-based company that posted record revenues of $949 million in 2005. Atlas World Group companies employ more than 700 people throughout North America. More than 600 Atlas agents in the United States and Canada specialize in corporate employee relocation and in the transportation of high-value items such as electronics, fine art and new fixtures and furniture.
