Bekins Northwest Joins Atlas Van Lines; Marks Atlas' Second Major Agent Conversion This Year

October 1, 1997

EVANSVILLE, (Ind.) -- Bekins Northwest announced today that it has joined forces with Atlas Van Lines, the nation's fifth-largest carrier of household goods and specialty products. With a fleet of over 250 vans and agency locations in five states, Bekins Northwest was one of Bekins Van Lines largest agents.

Bekins Northwest will continue to operate under the Bekins name, but as an agent for Atlas Van Lines. According to Paul Bekins, owner of Bekins Northwest and a member of the original Bekins family that started Bekins Van Lines, the decision to become an Atlas agent was based on Atlas' agent-ownership structure.

"Because Atlas is agent-owned, they treat agents like customers, providing the highest quality support service in the industry," said Bekins. "In addition, Atlas is in a tremendous growth mode while continually being ranked number one in customer satisfaction. Frankly, we believe Atlas provides the best opportunity for immediate and long-term growth in an industry that is becoming increasingly competitive."

According to Bekins, becoming an Atlas agent will allow Bekins Northwest to offer more product lines while enhancing service to existing customers. A well-known name in the COD market, Bekins expects to be more involved with national account and special products business as a result of the conversion.

Bekins Northwest had 1996 linehaul sales of $6 million and combined warehouse space of 372,000 square feet. Its corporate headquarters are located in Seattle, Wash., with agency offices in Anchorage, Alaska; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Boise, Idaho; Eugene Ore.; Portland, Ore.; and, Pasca, Spokane, Tacoma, and Yakima, Wash. Bekins Northwest was established in 1903.

Today's announcement marks the second major conversion for Atlas Van Lines during 1997. Earlier this year, Atlantic Relocation Systems - formerly a northAmerican agent - became an Atlas agent.

"Bekins Northwest is the second-largest agent ever recruited for Atlas Van Lines," says Michael Scavuzzo, vice president, agency services and development. "The conversion of Atlantic in April, and now the addition of Bekins Northwest is a testament to the benefits of agent-ownership."

Scavuzzo said Bekins Northwest will become one of Atlas Van Lines largest agents.

With world headquarters in Evansville, Ind., Atlas Van Lines is a major transporter of household goods and special products through some 600 agents across the U.S. and Canada, and over 800 worldwide.
