How to Prepare for Shipping Electronics

How to Ship Electonics and Move Appliances

Follow these tips for safely moving your computers and electronics.

Atlas is among the world's most trusted and experienced movers. We consistently rank high in quality based on customer evaluations of our service. You can count on us to transport your electronics safely. Preparation begins with your Atlas Account Representative. He or she will come to your home and survey the items you wish to move. Point out anything that may require special attention, such as:

  • personal computers and components
  • TVs, DVRs, DVD and Blu-Ray players
  • audio systems

Your Atlas Account Representative will explain how each should be prepared.

move electronics is in their original cartonsIf you decide to prepare items yourself, use the same, professional-grade materials Atlas uses.

  • stretch wrap and cushioning wrap
  • double- and triple-walled cartons
  • packing tape
  • carton labels (Do Not Load; Load Last/Unload First; Do Not Pack; Parts Box; Fragile)
  • fine tissue and kraft paper

Your Atlas Account Representative will supply these to you at affordable prices.

If you prefer Atlas to do the packing, your Atlas Account Representative will arrange service for you. We'll fit your schedule and allow enough time for our professionals to do the job.

Tips for preparing your electronics for safe transport.

  • Use a qualified service provider to remove and uninstall wall-mounted AV equipment. Your Atlas Account Representative can locate a reputable professional in your area.
  • Move electronics in original cartons with the original packing materials. If you don't have these, use sturdy cartons that provide a good fit. Cushion your items inside the carton with bubble wrap, paper padding or foam peanuts.
  • Consult your owner's manual for special instructions on Plasma and flat-panel TVs. If you don't have a manual, your Atlas Account Representative can explain how.

Be ready before your Atlas crew arrives.

  1. Back up all software.
  2. Draw a simple diagram (or tape color codes on wires) to make reconnecting much easier.
  3. Disconnect all wiring and cables.
  4. Keep components together, in boxes clearly labeled.
  5. Pack wires and cables with their corresponding electronic units.
  6. Pack small accessories, such as remote controls, with each component. Or place them in a designated Parts Box. Note this on the inventory list so small parts are not misplaced.
  7. Submit a list of your electronic components and computer equipment (with serial numbers) to your homeowner's insurance company.
  8. Atlas cannot take down TV antennas or satellite dishes. If you wish, we can arrange for a professional to take care of it.

Atlas follows a process in Electronics Shipping for your protection.

You play an important part in our process to ensure your things arrive safely. We will ask you to complete and sign the Customer's Declaration of Value, a part of the Bill of Lading (see pages 25 and 26 of this booklet: Important Information for when you move). The first page of this two-part form spells out your responsibilities. You will notice Atlas may not be liable in the event certain items are lost or damaged. Please be familiar with these items and arrange to transport them yourself.

The second page of the form provides an inventory of your valuables. Atlas relies on you to complete this form. We use it to determine your shipment value and which items need special care. As well as electronics, list all high-value items you want Atlas to move, including:

  • CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, Gaming Systems
  • antiques, collectibles, and art
  • precious stones and metals

Your Atlas Professional Van Operator must see each high-value item before loading it onto the truck. Please make sure carton labels and written instructions are clear and visible. It's our job to see that every item moves safely. Should contents of a carton you pack become damaged during transit, the liability may be yours. If we ask you to repack a carton, it's because we're looking out for your best interest.

At your new home...

Check off each item as it is unloaded, using your Customer Responsibilities form and Customer Check-Off sheet. If something appears damaged, make a note of it. If you think an item is missing, alert your Atlas crew immediately so they may locate it.

Do you have homeowner's insurance?

When you sell your home, your homeowners insurance may run out or your coverage may change. Before you move, call your insurance company and find out if your policy applies. Know its limitations. Does it protect you...

  • while your goods are loaded, transported, and unloaded?
  • from fire and theft?
  • from dents, scratches, and missing pieces?

Atlas offers valuation for your protection.

Valuation refers to the liability Atlas assumes—and the amount you may receive if an item is lost or damaged. Unless you specify otherwise, Atlas assumes liability based on your purchase of full-value protection (FVP). This is an affordable choice for peace of mind. In the unlikely event an item is lost, damaged, or destroyed, it will be repaired or replaced at our option.

Atlas provides basic protection (BP) at no cost. However, it limits our liability on any item to 60¢ per pound. This may not provide enough coverage for your peace of mind. If you choose BP, we will ask you to indicate so on the Order for Service.

You can find out more about your coverage options here. Or ask your Atlas Account Representative for a copy of Valuation Options: What's Right For You?

If you have any questions, talk to your Atlas Account Representative. We want your electronics to have all the protection you expect when you move with Atlas.
