Cherry Hill History

Settlers first arrived to the area in the early 1600's and the first township was formed in 1695 under the name "Waterford Township". The first schoolhouse was built in the 1750's, and a larger school and community building was erected in 1831. When the town was reincorporated as Delaware Township in 1844, agriculture, milling and carriage-making were the dominant industries. Much of Cherry Hill's produce was grown for the Campbell's Soup Company, located in nearby Camden. During the 1940's, investors built a horse racing track in Delaware Township, which turned out to be a successful venture in the post-WWII economy. The race track attracted hotels, nightclubs and restaurants, which in turn attracted developers of upscale homes. The growing municipality faced a name-change when a new post office was set to open, and there was already another post office named Delaware, New Jersey. The municipality selected the name Cherry Hill in 1961, and the community has since continued to thrive and attract an educated and affluent population.
