Tampa is the third largest city in Florida, and its port is the seventh largest in the nation. Much of Tampa’s economy is founded on the port as well as tourism, agriculture, and the military. The city is home to the MacDill Air Force Base, which spans over 5,700 acres. But, it’s not all business in Tampa. Tampa History

The Tampa Bay region became U.S. territory in 1845. Development of the area began during that time and continued to grow with the railroad extension in 1884 and the mining and shipping industries boom in the 1880s and 1890s. During the Spanish-American War in 1898, the area was used as the primary place for U.S. troops to prepare and leave for Cuba. In 1914, the airline industry had a major milestone as the first ever commercial flight landed in Tampa from St. Petersburg, FL.

Tampa lies along Florida’s west coast, bordered by Hillsborough Bay and Old Tampa Bay, and is roughly 25 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico. Tampa is one of America’s stormiest cities, with a summer thunderstorm season lasting from June to September. The annual average temperature is 73.1° F, and the annual average precipitation is about 45 inches.

 

Tampa Transportation

Tampa is located in Hillsborough County, and is part of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART). HART offers public transportation to residents and visitors, with bus services, vanpools, trolleys, park-and-ride services, and others. Their buses and vans are also wheelchair accessible, and bike-friendly.
