Where many Colorado cities began as crude settlements, Longmont was started as a planned city. In 1870, a group of prominent investors from Chicago purchased 60,000 acres of land for a townsite. They planned the town, then brought people, building materials, and lumber to their chosen location. By 1871, Longmont was open for business. With irrigation provided by the St. Vrain River, Longmont proved to be suitable for agriculture, flour mills, and a sugar beet industry. The city attracted a diverse population of settlers from Sweden, Germany, Mexico, and Japan. By 1910, the population reached over 4,000 residents. Over the next four decades, Longmont's growth was slowed by two wars and the Great Depression. In 1950, the population was just 8,000. From the early 1960's onward, the local economy transitioned from an agriculture base to one based on technology, leading to rapid growth. In 2000, the population in Longmont exceeded 70,000, and today exceeds 88,000.
