Trusting Online Reviews

As with any service that involves customer interaction, customer reviews are almost guaranteed to happen. Sometimes, the tricky part is figuring out which of those reviews are legitimate. How do you determine that what you are reading online is truthful? In the moving industry, trust is a huge factor that goes into many individuals’ decision when it comes to selecting a moving company. Oftentimes, customers will immediately resort to the internet to do a little digging about the moving company or service they are considering.

With sites like Yelp and Kudzu publishing reviews every second, consumers may have a hard time differentiating what is truthful and what is not. CNBS found that nearly 80 percent of consumers trust online review sites as much as personal recommendations, according to a study by BrightLocal, and almost 75 percent of customers say positive reviews make them trust a business more. Atlas has several tips to consider before jumping online to search for reviews:

Be wary of paid reviewers: Surprisingly, there are individuals out there that get paid to publish false information on review sites about certain companies. These reviews are typically very vague, lacking in key move details. To ensure that what you are reading isn’t a fake review, do some searching around for other reviews that this individual has written. If it sounds like similar language is being used every time, there is a good chance that false information is being published by a paid reviewer.

Emotional Reviews: If you come across a review that seems way too “over the top”, it probably is. Sometimes customers take to review sites when they are still very angry and upset, or also because they’ve been promised a kickback from the company. Venting with extremely positive or negative comments may be a red flag about the customers’ motive. Do some research to ensure that it’s not a fake post, or written by a customer that was offered compensation for publishing it.

Check out the company website: There are websites out there that publish negative or false reviews about a company until they agree to pay money to purchase and clean up their profile. In many cases, the best source for customer reviews is what the company offers straight from their website. If not, you can still find very valuable information that may give customers insight into the legitimacy of the company. Moving companies that handle interstate moves must include their US DOT number on their site. Movers must also follow state licensing requirements, which can be obtained here.

Atlas Van Lines publishes moving reviews from real customers that can be read straight from our website. You can also find out more about how to ensure that your Atlas Agent is a Genuine Atlas Mover, here.
