How to read your moving contract [Video]

When you hire a moving company, you'll be asked to sign a contract. But before signing, it's important to read the document thoroughly to fully understand the terms. First, make sure all of the moving details are correct, including the date the movers agreed to be at your house.

Then, see if the quote listed in the contract is binding or non-binding. A binding estimate is preferable - it's the maximum amount you can be charged no matter what. A non-binding estimate means you may have to pay more than the amount that's listed. In this case, ask the company about any potential extra fees.

Finally, check to see what valuation options the moving company provides in the event that any of your belongings are damaged during the relocation. Typically, they'll offer anywhere from minimal to full value protection.
